- SEND IN THE PLOT NINJAS! Literally. Have them suddenly show up in a scene, do some modifying, and then carry on.
+ if you do it more than once.
++ if at some point, the /only/ reason something is done is because the Plot Ninjas force the characters into doing it. It can be something small, like taking the stairs instead of an elevator (with the Plot Ninjas menacing anyone who tries to approach the elevator), but it has to be something.
++ if what the characters end up doing ends up being very important to the success (or failure ^.~) of their Quest.
The Next Step - Someone, preferably an Omniscient Narrator type (even if you are narrating first person), must holler the line, "SEND IN THE PLOT NINJAS!"
+ if you are sending them in more than once, and use the line every time.
++ if at some point the Plot Ninjas are called...but don't come.
+++ if the Omniscient Narrator complains.
+++ + if the narrator threatens to quit because of it.
